After more than sixteen years of service,
MetaTrader 4 is being discontinued at GCI.
GCI is sunsetting MetaTrader 4 in favour of MetaTrader 5, the modern, multi-asset successor platform from MetaQuotes. To every client who has traded with us on MT4 over the years, thank you. Here is what you need to know about what comes next.
Why GCI is retiring MetaTrader 4
GCI MetaTrader 4 launched in 2008. It became one of GCI most widely used trading platforms, and for two decades it served traders well, including, since 2002, the clients who built their relationship with GCI on it.
Markets have changed since 2008. Traders today work with more asset classes, more order types, and more sophisticated risk-management tools than MT4 was originally designed to handle. MetaQuotes, the company that builds both platforms, has invested its development effort in MetaTrader 5 for several years. New features, new asset classes, and new platform integrations now arrive on MT5 first and on MT4 either late or not at all.
Continuing to operate MT4 at GCI would mean offering a platform that is no longer the focus of its own developer. Rather than keep clients on a slowly drifting platform, we are moving everyone forward to MT5, where the active development, the broader market coverage, and the modern execution environment live.
For long-term GCI clients who have traded MT4 with us across multiple market cycles: thank you. The decision to retire a platform you may have used for years is not one we have taken lightly, and we have designed the migration path to make the move as smooth as possible.
What’s better on MT5Three reasons your trading will be in good hands on MT5
Broader market coverage
MT5 was designed for multi-asset trading from the start. The same platform that runs your forex trades also handles stocks, indices, futures, bonds, and cryptocurrencies natively, with a single account view across all of them.
Modern execution & more order types
More order types, more time frames (21 vs 9), depth-of-market view, and an economic calendar built into the platform. MT5’s execution architecture is faster and supports a wider range of trading styles than MT4.
Active development by MetaQuotes
New features and security updates are released for MT5 on an active development schedule. MT4 has been in long-term maintenance mode for years, staying on it means staying on a platform that is no longer growing.
